Brading Emergency Culvert Repairs, Isle of Wight

project overview

The works involved the emergency replacement of a failed brick barrel culvert beneath the highway with a new rigidrain pipe and concrete surround, with associated downstream reinforced concrete and stonework headwall works.

The site is located at Vicarage Lane, Brading, Isle of Wight on an A class road within a 20mph traffic calming zone. The site is close to a number of residential properties and there is a pedestrian footway either side of the highway which remained operational during the works, which were undertaken under temporary traffic lights in accordance with New Roads and Street Works Act requirements. Project risks which we identified and successfully managed during the works included: interface with highway users and pedestrians, identification and protection of existing underground services, temporary stability of excavations and working over/next to water.

All plant and machinery was sourced from our extensive fleet which includes excavators (3-30t), tipper trucks (7.5-28t), dumpers, pumps, compressors and associated small tools, all based at our local commercial depots in Hale Common and at our Head Office on the Isle of Wight. All works were carried out by our full time local work force based on the Isle of Wight.
